Description

The canary is a small songbird native to the Canary Islands. Males are famous for their melodious song. Lifespan: 8 to 12 years.

Habitat

A long rather than tall cage (minimum 60 cm long) with wooden perches, a bath and exposure to natural light.

Diet

Canary seed mix, breeding mash during reproduction, leafy greens, small amount of fruit and a cuttlebone.

Behaviour

Rather solitary in captivity, the male canary sings to mark territory. It fears stress, draughts and sudden changes.

Essential tips

  • Avoid avocado, chocolate, onion, salt and too much parsley.
  • No draughts, no proximity to the kitchen.
  • Lukewarm bath several times a week.
  • Natural light is essential for singing.
