Description
The chinchilla is a rodent from the Andes with exceptionally dense fur. Crepuscular and long-lived, it reaches 12 to 20 years.
Habitat
A large tall cage with untreated wooden shelves, no plastic, in a cool room (max 22 °C / 72 °F). A dust bath is essential.
Diet
Unlimited quality hay, chinchilla-specific pellets, filtered water. Very few treats: their digestive system is fragile.
Behaviour
Discreet, curious and very jumpy. They hate heat, noise and loneliness. Prefer same-sex pair housing.
Essential tips
- Never above 25 °C / 77 °F: heatstroke risk.
- Dust bath (never water) several times a week.
- Avoid fresh fruit, wet vegetables, fatty seeds.
- Handle very gently, never grab by the tail.
