Description

The dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a carnivorous mammal domesticated for more than 15,000 years. A loyal, intelligent and social companion, it comes in hundreds of breeds with very different sizes, coats and temperaments.

Habitat

Dogs live alongside humans, in apartments or houses with gardens. They need a clean space, a comfortable bed and daily walks for both physical and mental balance.

Diet

The dog is omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency. A balanced diet relies on quality animal protein, fats, moderate carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Kibble, home-cooked meals or raw feeding must match age, size and activity level.

Behaviour

As a pack animal, the dog enjoys company and dislikes long solitude. It communicates through posture, vocalisations and scent. Early socialisation and positive reinforcement training are essential.

Essential tips

  • Always provide fresh water.
  • Avoid chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol and cooked bones.
  • Two meals a day for adults, three to four for puppies.
  • Offer at least two daily walks suited to the breed.
  • See a vet at any lasting change in appetite or behaviour.
