Description

The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) is a small herbivorous rodent native to the Andes. Gentle, sociable and chatty, it lives 5 to 8 years.

Habitat

It needs a spacious floor cage (minimum 1 m² for two), away from draughts, with hay, a hide and a tray of plant-based litter.

Diet

Unlimited hay, daily fresh vegetables rich in vitamin C (pepper, parsley, endive) and grain-free pellets. Guinea pigs cannot synthesise vitamin C.

Behaviour

A herd animal, it must live in a group (at least two females or a neutered male with females). It communicates through distinctive squeaks.

Essential tips

  • Provide vitamin C daily via fresh vegetables.
  • Avoid excess cabbage, garlic, onion, avocado, dried fruit.
  • Handle gently and always support the hindquarters.
  • Clean the cage at least twice a week.
  • Avoid cedar or resinous pine shavings.
