Description

The hamster is a small nocturnal and solitary rodent. Syrians live alone; dwarf hamsters (Roborovski, Campbell) sometimes in pairs depending on the species. Lifespan: 2 to 3 years.

Habitat

A cage with narrow bars or a large terrarium (minimum 80 × 50 cm), a deep layer of bedding for digging, a solid large-diameter wheel, hides and a sand bath.

Diet

A balanced seed mix, a little fresh vegetable (cucumber, broccoli, carrot), occasional protein (dried insects, cooked egg) and filtered water.

Behaviour

The hamster is crepuscular and nocturnal. It stores food in its cheek pouches. Waking it during the day is very stressful.

Essential tips

  • Avoid chocolate, citrus, onion, bitter almonds and sweets.
  • Use a solid wheel with no bars to protect its back.
  • Never use exercise balls — dangerous for the legs.
  • Handle gently, never wake abruptly.
  • Partial weekly cleaning to keep familiar scents.
