Description

The domestic rabbit is a small herbivorous mammal descended from the European wild rabbit. Sociable and expressive, it can live 8 to 12 years in good health.

Habitat

Rabbits need a large pen or a secured room, with unlimited hay, a hide, a water bowl and a litter box. Pet-shop cages are almost always too small.

Diet

80% quality hay, 15% varied leafy greens (endive, fennel, parsley, basil), 5% plain pellets and fresh water. Fruit only as an occasional treat.

Behaviour

Rabbits are crepuscular, curious and playful. They love digging, chewing and company: keeping a neutered pair is strongly recommended.

Essential tips

  • Avoid bread, biscuits, chocolate, avocado, onion, potato.
  • Check teeth monthly — they grow continuously.
  • Spay/neuter to prevent cancers and territorial marking.
  • Regular brushing, especially during moulting.
  • Hay must always be available for healthy digestion.
