Description
The pet rat (Rattus norvegicus) is one of the most intelligent and affectionate rodents. Sociable, playful and clean, it lives 2 to 3 years.
Habitat
A large cage with vertical bars (at least 80 × 50 × 80 cm for two), multiple levels, hammocks, tubes and a solid large-diameter wheel.
Diet
A specific rat mix (extruded or block diet), daily fresh vegetables, little fruit, lean protein (cooked chicken, egg) two to three times a week.
Behaviour
Rats form real bonds with humans. They must live in groups (never alone) and need daily supervised free-roaming time outside the cage.
Essential tips
- Avoid chocolate, citrus for males, raw meat and sweets.
- Always keep at least two same-sex companions.
- Daily supervised free-roam time.
- Watch for common tumours and respiratory issues.
