Description

The ferret is a small domestic carnivore from the mustelid family. Playful, curious and very energetic, it lives 6 to 10 years.

Habitat

A large multi-level cage (minimum 1.2 m tall) plus several hours of daily free roaming in a ferret-proofed room (cables, toxic plants, windows).

Diet

Strict carnivore: quality ferret or kitten kibble rich in animal protein (>35%) and fat. No grains or sugar.

Behaviour

Ferrets sleep a lot but play intensely during active hours. They love tunnels, hides and the company of fellow ferrets.

Essential tips

  • Avoid fruit, vegetables, chocolate, onion, sugar, dairy.
  • Annual vaccinations (distemper is essential).
  • Spaying is critical for females.
  • Watch heat: above 27 °C / 80 °F they suffer.
